When to start integration planning?

    The easy answer: The earlier the better
    It also depends on the complexity of the acquisition and the rate of change that will need to happen. In my current project that is a growth play with no layoffs or pressure on cost saving synergies it was ok for the planning to start later as the employee anxiety was not there. But if the project is on the other side of the spectrum the earlier you start and the more answers you have by Day 1, the bigger chance of success.

    I would prefer integration planning to start early, ideally around the due diligence stage. At that point, having an overview of the integration plan could help test the strategic fit and ensures both sides are aligned. It also sets the groundwork for smoother integration later, by identifying potential cultural, operational, or system challenges before the deal is finalized.
